For Guys: How to Look Dateable

by denisesalceda

Okay, so I like a well-dressed man, is that a crime?

Unfortunately, a straight man with fashion sense is hard to come by. I think a man can be stylish and maintain his masculinity–absolutely.

If anything, actually putting some thought into what you (a guy) wears could get you more attention from the female crowd, make you look like a more successful and influential person, and boost your self-confidence. Really. Is that motivation enough? I would think so.

Here are some do and don’ts of mens fashion, along with some other examples of hip and stylish wear. Check’ em out, and reevaluate your wardrobe. C’mon, do it for us girls. Pleeeeeese.

You’re in serious trouble if you…

Wear a backpack with a suit, dress like a tourist (Hawaiian shirts, frumpy shorts, sneakers with tube socks), or look like Steve Urkel. You’re also in trouble if you wear socks with birkenstocks, never take off your hooded sweatshirt, or wear dad jeans. If you do any of these things, stop immediately.

Do’s and Don’ts

Dad jeans vs. Dark jeans

Don’t wear dad jeans that go up to your waist with a tacky belt and running shoes. Instead, do go for medium rise jeans with a dark wash that sit at the hips. Way hotter. Seriously. They’re fitted instead of baggy, and follow the shape of your legs instead of saddlebagging from the waist like the jeans on the left.

Cheap tie vs. Professional tie

Don’t wear a tacky tie that is worn too long, has a dated pattern, and whose knot is too tiny because it’s made of cheap material. Do wear a tie that doesn’t hang below the waistline of your pants, with an understated pattern, and made of sturdier silk which creates a more solid knot.

Lumpy leather jacket vs. Fitted leather jacket

There’s nothing modern about a lumpy leather jacket. It’s not even retro-cool. Opt for a more fashionable and fitted look by going down a size until you can’t get the jacket on, and then get the next size up. It will feel snug at first, but will take your body’s shape over time.

Dated belt vs. Timeless belt

Don’t wear a cowboy style silver-tipped belt, or any other dated styles. Do invest in a high-quality belt that is an inch to an inch and a half wide. Make sure it smells and feels buttery–that means it’ll age quite nicely. The buckle should also be subtle.

The Oversized suit vs. The Tailored suit

Don’t wear a suit that is a size too big with extra material boxing around the shoulders, sagging at the waist, and flopping at the ankles. Do but a suit that fits you and get it tailored so that it doesn’t look like you’re swimming in it. It makes a huge difference.

More Guy’s Style

A v-neck t-shirt is super easy to throw on paired with some dark jeans and looks effortlessly stylish. Instant girl-magnet. 😉

V-neck sweaters are also a good addition to your wardrobe for the colder seasons.

Leather Jacket

Upgrade from a dumpy hooded sweatshirt to a nice leather jacket.

Be that bad boy in the black leather jacket that girls chase after.

Men can accessorize too

It’s hard to go wrong with aviators.

If you wear a backpack, try something like this instead of your typical Jansport, Ogio, or Oakley bag.

You can pull off wearing a scarf and still maintain your manliness–by making you look polished and sophisticated. Plus, it’ll keep you warm in winter.

Don’t be afraid to accessorize.

Outfit ideas

Wear a collared shirt, v-neck button-up sweater, dark jeans, and fashionable sneakers for a casual, yet put-together look.

This suit means business.

For the urban professional: wear a black suit with a beige v-neck sweater over a white v-neck shirt.

A white suit is just right for a business trip to an exotic country. You go on those all the time, right? 😉

Style inspiration from the runways

Armani gets the right mix of casual and dressy.

Dolce and Gabbana shows that guys can mix a suit jacket with some jeans and distressed leather shoes for the perfect night-out-on-the-town outfit.

Update your wardrobe with these suggestions and ideas in mind.

No matter what people say, looks do matter, and first impressions are hard to shake off, so make sure you’re sending the right message with your outward appearance.

The world–and girls especially–will thank you for it,
